As a result of a “Lost Sheep” project in 2013 to re-connect with many people not seen at established centers for some time, COPT made contact with Lucas, an ex-student now teacher, who advised us that due to lack of funds to get to the centers via taxi’s, he was teaching a group of friends in a “shanty town” near his home at Effingham. Effingham is a northern suburban township area amongst the very poorest of townships around Durban.

He asked us for help in teaching as he felt that he had passed on most of his limited basic knowledge to this group.

We immediately started arranging study classes and discussion groups with 10-15 people attending on a regular basis and these classes continue to be ongoing, although at times intermittently, depending on availability of volunteers.
